India produces approximately 9 Lakh+ tonnes of tea every year. Dibrugarh, located along the banks of the Brahmaputra, is known as the ‘Tea City of India’ because it is a major tea production center in Assam and the largest tea-exporting town in the country. This city is surrounded by tea gardens. Nearly 50% of the tea produced in Assam comes from just three districts—Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and Jorhat.
The rich soil, high rainfall, and cool temperature of Dibrugarh provide ideal conditions for tea cultivation. Assam has more than 800 large and 60,000 small tea estates spread across 3,00,000 hectares, making it the largest tea plantation concentration in the world. This industry provides employment to 17% of the state’s workforce. Assam’s tea contributes 55% of India’s total tea production and 80% of the country’s tea exports.
